Sonatina for piano for 4 hands, 1940.

Sonatina

This composition was meant to be performed at secret concerts during the occupation period. This is how the composer describes the circumstances of its creation in his Fragments of Memories from 1939-1945:

"just then, in the absence of any “normal” public concerts, an underground, secret musical life was born. I thought at the time that musical works should be made as simple as possible so that they could be performed in wartime conditions, with concerts shoved from public halls into private flats. That was the idea behind "Sonatina for 4 hands", that had its premiere at a secret concert at Hortensja Street, I don’t remember the exact date, but surely in the summer of 1940. I played the treble and Konstanty Regamey – the bass. After the war I happened to play Sonatina with my wife – even at the BBC. It was one of the first items the PWM published after the war. Today, this piece does not give me much thrill, except for the middle, slow part, which I regard as perfectly devised and executed.

Sonatina is written in the Neo-classical style with some references to Baroque. It consists of three parts: Allegro giustoAndante con moto e molto espressivo and Allegro vivace .
