Symphony no. 3 for two string orchestras, 1948-49.
This work constitutes Palester’s explicit move towards dodecaphony, but although he introduces some twelve-tone themes, he does not follow strictly the rules of dodecaphony, handling the twelve-tone material in a free manner. At the same time he uses the traditional sonata form. First movement, Molto lento e tranquillamente - Allegro, assai moderato, is a classical sonata allegro, with twelve-tone themes and a shortened recapitulation. Second movement, Molto adagio e tranquillamente, is a traditional slow episode. The finale, Allegretto commodo, consists of variations crowned with an impressive fugue.
The world premiere of Symphony no. 3 took place in Brussels on 16 May 1951, the conductor was Franz André. The work was published by Suvini-Zerboni.
